Does it seem that non-American moviemakers can really make the hair on your arms stand on end more than an American moviemaker can?
I watched "The Eye", which is a chinese horror movie. It was very creepy!! I did jump a few times. Perhaps it's because of the unknown? What do you all think?

Wed, April 6, 2005 - 11:55 AMi think that japanese horror films rely on more subtle scary happenings whereas American films... wes craven, etc... require the jumping in your seat-the music is getting all crazy-bad guy is gonna get you- kind of stuff.
the eye is great... as well as the eye II. loved every minute of it. -

Re: Is it me... or..
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 12:28 PMand unfortunately, the Eye is being remade for American audiences. Even tho it is being directed by Hideo Nakata (Ringu, Chaos), it'll surely be subpar to the original.
Something about letting the Japanese directors remake their country's horror films for American audiences is a great concept in theory, but never seem to translate over well. It is no fault to these directors, it's just difficult to try to capture the culture and ideologies of a society not of their own. And being under the restraint of the Hollywood studios surely limits their integrity as well. -

Re: Is it me... or..
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 12:35 PMhonestly, what i've noticed, at least with takashi shimizu, is that the movies are almost identical but with different characters. A friend and i saw the american version of The Grudge and rented Ju-On the next week... we couldn't even get past the first 20 min. The movie was so identical, even down to how each shot was layed out.
I hear you in regards to it not being the director's fault that the movies translate poorly, for sure. I question sometimes whether the remakes are just so that lazy Americans don't have to read the subtitles. :) -

Re: Is it me... or..
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 12:43 PMthat's exactly why: so lazy Americans (oxymoron) don't have to read subtitles. Reading subtitles requires a little bit of extra brain power and a little bit of interactivity. That is way too much to ask for of an American audience. I remember when Crouching Tiger came out, there were so many people in the theater freakin out cuz it had subtitles. I was cracking up at the absurdity of it.
Dubbing these films into English instead would be a hell of a lot better than remaking them. And cheaper too!

Re: Is it me... or..
Thu, July 28, 2005 - 8:22 AMby making it appear it diminishes the sense of adrenaline produce in our body, and because we have grown to know these creatures fabricated by hollywood we automatically link it fiction...not like in asian productions, where the horror lies in the unknown, and that is a collective fear that habitates in each person forever....will pass on to every generation.....
